How to evaluate exercise intensity and choose appropriate drag chain cables?

The lifespan of a drag chain cable is essentially its durability under dynamic mechanical stress. The intensity of exercise determines whether cables will be repeatedly bent, twisted, or stretched, leading to fatigue fracture or insulation damage.


1. Clarify the motion parameters

Before selecting, it is necessary to accurately grasp the operating parameters of the equipment, including:


Maximum operating speed: If the robot joints move 0.5 meters per second, the AGV can travel at a speed of 2m/s

Movement frequency: number of repetitions per minute (such as 30 bends per minute)

Maximum bending radius: The minimum bending radius of the cable inside the drag chain (usually 3-10 times the outer diameter of the cable)

Motion path complexity: Is it a linear reciprocating motion? Or is it a rotation in three-dimensional space? Is there an emergency stop or turn?


Example: A six axis welding robot with an "S-shaped" joint motion path, bending about 40 times per minute, and a maximum speed of 1.8m/s. Its cable bending frequency is much higher than that of ordinary conveyor belt systems, requiring the use of specialized cables with high flexibility and fatigue resistance.


2. Calculate the equivalent number of bends

Estimate the total number of bends of the cable during its lifecycle using the formula:


Total number of bends=operating time (hours) x number of bends per minute x 60


For example, a device runs for 8 hours a day, bends 30 times per minute, and runs for 5 years (2000 hours):


2000 × 30 × 60=3.6 million bends


According to industry standards, the bending and folding life of ordinary RV cables is about 50000 to 100000 times, while the reliable life of industrial grade drag chain cables should be between 5 and 20 million times. If the actual operating frequency exceeds 1 million times, it is necessary to consider using specialized cables with polymer material sheaths, ultra-fine copper wire conductors, and anti torsion structures.


3. Match cable grade

Selection suggestion: If the equipment runs for more than 10 hours per day, or there is an emergency stop or turn action, it is necessary to choose high-strength or anti twist conversion drag chain cables to avoid equipment shutdown due to cable breakage in the later stage.
